But as we move into a new year, we move into a new set of issues. The current unemployment rate is the lowest we’ve seen in over 40 years, standing at 3.7%. This means the competition for acquiring top talent is at its peak. It has never been more important for organizations to take a look in the mirror and make necessary changes in preparation for a new year.

1) Technology will take the spotlight.
Talking about the future means talking about technology. And in the HR arena, we’re talking about AI technology in particular. Throughout the past year, engineers have continued to invest time and manpower into developing AI technology that can be integrated with typical workplace operations. AI’s prominence will only increase in 2019. Machine learning and AI technology pave the way for innovation within operational tasks such as staffing and allotting PTO. While this technology has far to go before it’s perfected, integrating AI technology can help in overall work flow and let teams better focus on work and your vision.
2) Employers are looking for chemistry rather than accolades.
Great team chemistry fosters great workplaces. And a bad hire can damage chemistry quickly. In order to preserve a healthy working environment, employers should hire people who fit in to it and can help it grow. That’s why more employers are using their company culture to help guide hiring decisions. Employers want people who genuinely care about the people they work with and for. Hiring someone who doesn’t have common goals or share the company vision can deeply affect your team and environment. A best practice for employers to implement when going through the hiring process is to make their company values, processes and mission known during the onboarding process. Explaining these things early on can help employers detect any problem candidates and ensure that the right people are hired. We look forward to this being a larger conversation in the new year.
3) Flexibility in the workplace.
Today’s candidates look beyond salary when considering offers. More people are prioritizing mental health. That’s why candidates are now looking at more than just a number, they are looking for a healthy and livable working environment. Research shows us that the majority of the top places to work are offering their employees incentives and extra perks that live outside of health insurance and 401k matches. These companies are offering things such as:
– Flexible work schedules
– Unlimited PTO
– Wellness programs
– On-site amenities (gym, unique work spaces, childcare, etc.)
– Compressed work schedules
Some organizations have already introduced a few of these by implementing 4-day work weeks, summer hours and unlimited PTO. With this conversation continuing to grow into the new year, employers are encouraged to assess their current employee benefits, wellness packages and salaries to ensure they remain competitive with other organizations in their field.
